Latest News: MUI Urges Mosques to Hold Prayers for Palestinian Independence during Ramadan

General Chair of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) Anwar Iskandar asked all mosque imams in the country to pray for the safety of Gazans and Palestinian independence. He wants prayers to be said simultaneously during Ramadan.
This was conveyed by Anwar after the government through the Ministry of Religion (Kemenag) determined 1 Ramadan 1447 H on Thursday, 19 February 2026. The determination was made at the Borobudur Hotel, Central Jakarta, Tuesday (17/2/2026).
“We really hope that all mosque imams throughout Indonesia can be strengthened to pray for the safety of Muslims and the Palestinian people. Especially the Palestinian people in Gaza, with what is called Qunut Nazilah,” said Anwar at a press conference.

He hopes that all community organizations such as Nahdlatul Ulama to Muhammadiyah can join in this joint prayer. According to him, Ramadan is an efficacious time for prayer.
“You can do it through DMI or through mass organizations: NU, Muhammadiyah, Al Irsyad, Al Washliyah and others, Al Wahdah, to call on all the imams during Ramadan who are at this good and efficacious time to ask Allah for freedom, liberty, independence for the Palestinian people and help to friends in Gaza,” he explained.
Apart from that, Anwar also said that the differences in determining the 1st of Ramadan should not be a problem. He said that differences in Indonesia are inevitable as a nation with Bhinneka Tunggal Ika.
“In fact, in Indonesia there are more than 80 Islamic mass organizations in Indonesia. The differences in these organizations allow for different ubudiyah practices. But these differences only concern issues that are ijtihadi in nature, which are technical in nature. Qath’i is no different, qath’i is all the same,” he said.

He wants every society to understand these differences. According to him, the unity of the people is the main thing.
“But the most important thing is that we must always maintain our integrity as Muslims. Therefore, it is important to understand and respect each other. Even if necessary, we as a democratic nation need to get used to being different. To be different. As long as it’s not just about principles. Just not about creeds. Just not about qath’i,” he said.
