President Prabowo Subianto officially launched the People’s School as a free education program with a dormitory concept for children from poor and extreme poor families based on the National Socioeconomic Single Data (DTSEN). This program is a breakthrough for the government to break the chain of poverty through equal access to education.
The inauguration was centered on the Integrated People’s School (SRT) 9 Banjarbaru in the Banjarbaru Social Welfare Education and Training Center (BBPPKS), South Kalimantan, on Monday (12/1) which was attended simultaneously by People’s Schools throughout Indonesia.
Prabowo arrived at the location at around 11.10 WITA and immediately inspected a number of facilities, ranging from classrooms, computer laboratories, libraries, biology laboratories, mini theaters, dining rooms, to dormitories. He was also greeted by students’ shouts and Banjar art, and interacted directly with the students.
Then, Prabowo symbolically pressed the siren button as a sign of the inauguration of 166 People’s Schools in 34 Provinces. Representatives of People’s School students from all over Indonesia who attended also performed choirs, theater, speeches, and various line attractions.
In his speech, Prabowo appreciated the Ministry of Social Affairs and all ministries/institutions involved in implementing this program.
“Thank you everyone, we have made this effort a reality, and I am frankly quite happy, quite big-hearted, I am actually moved to see the impact of our efforts,” he said in a written statement, Monday (12/1/2026).
He admitted that he was proud and touched by the changes in the students after 6 months at Sekolah Rakyat, as seen from the various performances and achievements they had achieved.
“I find it difficult to hold back my tears too, the same as the Minister of Social Affairs. We are moved, we shed tears because of what? Because we are proud, because we are happy to see our children. And we are moved, we remember, why do we remember? Imagine, if at that time we, I and the ministers, had not taken a brave stand,” he continued.
Prabowo also explained that he was targeting the construction of another 500 community schools with a capacity of 1,000 students per school.
“I believe that in the end we will achieve our target of 500 (points), and in the end, our target is for each school to have 1,000 students,” he said.
In the initial stages, these 166 pioneering People’s Schools are still utilizing facilities belonging to the Ministry of Social Affairs, Job Training Centers of the Ministry of Manpower, and regional government assets. However, the government through the Ministry of Public Works has begun targeting the construction of 104 permanent People’s School buildings in stages.
Apart from education, the People’s School is also designed to be a solution in resolving poverty by integrating with various superior government programs, starting from empowering parents of students, the 3 million house program, Free Health Checks (CKG), Free Nutritious Meals (MBG), health insurance for parents and students through PBI-JK, PKH social assistance and basic necessities, to membership in the Red and White Village Cooperative.
At the People’s School, students are not only provided with knowledge, but also character and skills education. From the start, students undergo DNA Talent Mapping to map their interests and talents and are then guided based on this potential, whether continuing their education to a higher level or working.
Previously, Minister of Social Affairs Saifullah Yusuf or Gus Ipul reported that the pioneering People’s School had been operating in 166 locations with a capacity of 15,945 students, supported by 2,218 teachers and 4,889 educational staff at elementary, middle school and high school levels or equivalent.
“We need to convey that there are a total of 166 points, spread across 34 provinces and 131 regencies/cities throughout Indonesia,” he said.
For your information, this activity was also attended by Coordinating Minister for Community Empowerment Abdul Muhaimin Iskandar, Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture Pratikno, Cabinet Secretary Lt.
