President Prabowo Subianto received PDIP General Chair Megawati Soekarnoputri at the State Palace this afternoon. Prabowo is considered to have a high statesmanlike attitude because he is still willing to meet Megawati even though he has opposing positions in the government.
This assessment was conveyed by the Executive Director of Trias Politika Agung Baskoro. He said Prabowo’s statesmanlike attitude should be emulated by political elites in Indonesia.
“The president has a high spirit of statesmanship, statesmanship, in my opinion, this needs to be an example for other political elites, despite very strong differences in views. Because this could be a positive precedent for other political elites to become more mature in politics and democracy, because good democracy runs on all kinds of differences, on various kinds of dynamic aspirations,” said Agung when contacted, Thursday (19/3/2026).
He also hopes that Prabowo and Megawati’s meeting can continue in the future. In this way, he said, the government can remain objective in running the government.
“The hope is that communication between figures, both President Prabowo and Mrs. Megawati, can continue, considering that PDIP is outside the government, so what? So that the government’s objectivity in carrying out its performance, its professionalism can be maintained, and ultimately this is very good for the people, because the people get input from various dimensions, from various perspectives,” he said.
Furthermore, Agung also said that the meeting between these two national figures was also a sign of close relations. He brought up Prabowo’s meeting with previous presidents and vice presidents which was previously held without Megawati.
“Personally, the relationship between President Prabowo and Mrs. Megawati is very good, so that when yesterday there was a meeting between the former president and the former vice president, Mrs. Mega was not able to attend, so this opportunity came up and was used by both of them, both President Prabowo and Mrs. Megawati, to continue communication and friendship, so that the President can reach out to all national figures,” he explained.
Then, he assessed that institutionally the meeting between Prabowo and Megawati confirmed Prabowo’s commitment to the politics of embrace. Prabowo, he said, wanted to ensure he received input from all sides regarding his performance so far.
“This is both good and positive for our democracy, and Ibu Mega and PDIP are already in a balancing position, meaning as critical partners and strategic partners, so that input, criticism and suggestions can continue to be made without any tendencies because the basis is objectivity, professionalism and proportionality, so that our democracy and the welfare of our society remain guaranteed,” he said.
