Deputy Chairman of Commission VI DPR RI Andre Rosiade accompanied the Minister of Public Works (PU) Dody Hanggodo to directly inspect the construction of the Payakumbuh-Sitangkai road in the Halaban area, Limapuluh Kota Regency, West Sumatra (Sumbar). This inspection marks the completion of the first phase of construction of the strategic section which went viral because it became the economic lifeblood of the local community.
During the visit, the Governor of West Sumatra Mahyeldi Ansharullah, the Regent of Limapuluh Kota Safni, the Regent of Tanah Datar Eka Putra, and the Head of the West Sumatra National Road Implementation Center (BPJN) Elsa Putra Friandi were also present. The presence of these cross-stakeholders confirms the seriousness of the central and regional governments in overseeing the acceleration of strategic infrastructure development in West Sumatra.
Andre Rosiade said that the Minister of Public Works ensured full support to continue the second phase of road construction, namely the Sitangkai-Batusangkar section in Tanah Datar Regency with a length of around 25 kilometers, which is planned to begin construction in mid-2026.
“Thank God, the first phase of Payakumbuh-Sitangkai has been completed. The Minister of Public Works has also ensured that construction will continue to Batusangkar. This road is very important because it is the main access for the community as well as driving the regional economy,” said Andre Rosiade, who is also Deputy Chair of the Gerindra Fraction of the DPR RI, in a written statement, Wednesday (28/1/2026).
Meanwhile, the Minister of Public Works, Dody Hanggodo, emphasized that the central government is in principle ready to support continued development funding provided that land acquisition issues are resolved by regional governments.
“From a budget perspective, the Ministry of Public Works is ready to support. The principle is clear, as long as the land is clean and clear, we can immediately encourage development,” said Dody Hanggodo.
He added, based on experience in various regions, delays in national infrastructure projects are generally not caused by budget limitations, but rather by unresolved land constraints. For this reason, he asked the relevant provincial and district governments to move quickly to ensure land readiness so that the second phase of the project is not delayed.
“If the land is ready, there is no reason to delay. This road is very strategic for connectivity and economic growth for the community,” he stressed.
The construction of the nearly six kilometer Payakumbuh-Sitangkai section is a direct follow-up to President Prabowo Subianto’s instructions through the Ministry of Public Works, in order to repair damaged regional roads which are hampered by budget constraints.
This project was built using concrete construction (rigid pavement) with a budget of around IDR 75 billion. Concrete construction was chosen because of the high level of heavy transport activity, especially C excavation mining vehicles in the area. It is considered that the use of asphalt will not last long due to the high tonnage of vehicles and has the potential to accelerate road damage.
Apart from the construction of main roads, safety aspects are also a concern for the government. Based on the proposal of Tanah Datar Regent Eka Putra, the central government will build a lifeline to anticipate traffic accidents, especially the risk of trucks experiencing brake failure on vulnerable routes. The construction of the lifeline requires cross-agency coordination because some of the land is in an area owned by PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI).
Andre Rosiade confirmed that in the near future a meeting will be held with the President Director of PT KAI to discuss handing over land, not only for the lifeline, but also to support plans to build the Padang Luar flyover.
Meanwhile, Governor Mahyeldi Ansharullah stated the provincial government’s readiness to maintain project sustainability through controlling permits and monitoring the tonnage of passing vehicles.
“The provincial government is ready to oversee the regulation of tonnage and permits so that the roads built by the central government do not quickly become damaged. This is a shared responsibility so that the large investment from the center really benefits the community,” said Mahyeldi.
The construction of the Payakumbuh-Sitangkai to Sitangkai-Batusangkar road is expected to become a strategic link between regions, reducing travel time, and strengthening connectivity and economic growth in the Luhak Nan Tuo area and its surroundings.
